Their primary motivation was a purported threat that was rumored to have been made by a middle-school student.
It led to a series of security measures, including having stationed patrols join the usual contingent of uniformed and undercover officers who keep close watch on the township’s schools and children – a display of protection that provided comfort to many .
Members of Mahwah’s PBA Local #143 wants those parents, merchants and others in town to know how much they appreciate the gestures:
“The tragic violence that occurred on February 14th in Parkland, Florida was an incident that we hope and pray will never be repeated in our local communities, our country or anywhere in the world. Rest assured, however, even at times when events of this magnitude are not at the forefront of the media, our members are still training, preparing and remaining hypervigilant for anything that can disrupt our peaceful way of life.
“In addition to the unfortunate event itself, our tight knit community, educators, and members of the Mahwah Police Department had to respond, investigate and dispel anything we thought could potentially be a threat to you and your families during the same time period.
“While these events were unfolding, many of you took the time out of your day to thank our members for what we do day in and day out. The thanks we received came in many forms, from a simple handshake to homemade food and catered lunches, as well as hand-made thank you cards and artwork. These thanks came from residents, business owners and their employees, and students from Ramapo College and Mahwah’s public schools.
“Therefore, the members of the Mahwah Policeman’s Benevolent Association and our families would like to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt thank you for your continued praise and support for our members.
“We look forward to serving and protecting you and your family or business with the same determination and pride in the future as we have in the past.
“Sincerely,
"Mahwah P.B.A. Local #143”
